The Chartered Institute of Local Government and Public Administration of Nigeria was founded in 1996 and on the 24th day of January, 2018 the Immediate Past President of Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari,GCFR, signed The Chartered Institute of Local Government and Public Administration of Nigeria Act No.1 of 2017.

The Act is published at Government Notice NO 7, NO 19, Vol.105 of the official Gazette of the federal Republic of Nigeria, issued on the 20th of January, 2018.

The institute exclusively regulates the training and practice of Local Government and Public Administrators in Nigeria. The Institute as at September 30,2022, had Ten Thousand, Three Hundred (10,300) Members  and Nine Thousand, Two Hundred (9,200) Students as registered Students.

The Institute is the only recognized professional body by law specializing exclusively in Local Government and Public Administration. It was established to play a vital role in the development and training of high qualified manpower for Local Government and Public Sector in the areas of Local Government Administration, Public Administration, Public Finance, Environmental Health Administration and Community Development Administration
